Summer is here and with it comes the inevitable heat. As we age, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can be dangerous. Older adults have a higher risk of developing heat-related illnesses due to physical changed in the body due to aging, chronic health conditions, and from the use of certain medications. When Hot is Too Hot Older adults need to be proactive and take precautions when the thermostat hits 80oF and higher so that they can avoid heat exhaustion and other heat-related ailments. Here are some tips to stay cool and healthy during the summer heat.

  • Stay out of direct exposure to sunlight as much as possible. Its best to plan outdoor activities in the early morning or when the sun starts to set.
  • Stay hydrated with plenty of water, clear juices, and other liquids that dont contain alcohol or caffeine, and avoid drinks that are high in sugar.
  • Keep cool in air-conditioned spaces. At Ashbridge Manor, all of our units have efficient air conditioning that is individually controlled to keep you comfortable all summer long.
  • Dress in light-colored, loose clothing whenever you can. Dark-colored clothing absorbs heat. Add a lightweight, wide-brimmed hat when you go outside to keep the sun off you and to help avoid sunburn.
  • Cool down with tepid showers, baths, or sponge baths when the heat gets to be too much. You can also use wet washcloths with cool water on your forehead, neck, wrists and ankles.

Recognizing Health Problems Caused by Heat Recognizing sickness from the hot weather is important. Here are just a few health problems caused by overexposure.

  • Dehydration This is a loss of water in your body. You may feel weak and suffer from a headache, dizziness, confusion, and you may even pass out.
  • Heat Exhaustion A serious condition caused by dehydration and too much heat. If not treated, it can cause heat stroke. You may experience heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and lethargy.
  • Heat Stroke This is a dangerous increase in your body temperature. In older adults, it can happen gradually over several days. It entails a body temperature of 104oF or higher; red, hot, dry skin; a fast pulse; nausea; and lethargy.
