New Years Resolutions for Seniors

As we approach the end of 2020, many people are looking back on this challenging year, but now is the time to look ahead. New Years resolutions have been around for a long time, but this year they may be even more important for seniors. Now is the time to reflect on your life and focus on things that will bring you joy and good health for all of next year. Here are a few healthy resolutions for seniors to consider for themselves. Become more active. While you should always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program, most people can set small, reasonable goals for extra physical activity every day. While most guidelines suggest that we need about 30 minutes per day, keep your resolution easy to achieve by promising yourself at least 10 minutes of exercise each day. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are a staple that we all enjoy, but you can make a commitment to health by promising yourself youll eat a few more servings per day of fresh, healthy vegetables and fruit every day. Look up old friends. We often lose track of friends over the years, but nurturing good friendships is a healthy way to stay positive in your life. Think of a person you shared part of your life with and find a way to reconnect through a social media platform, a phone call, or a letter. Find new ways to volunteer your time. Giving to others brings joy to ourselves. It helps us feel needed and it feels wonderful when we see how much people appreciate our efforts. Next year, find a new way to volunteer your time to any charity that feels close to your heart. Focus on brain health. Keeping our brains active helps prevent memory difficulties and other cognitive issues, so make a resolution to challenge your brain every day. Try doing interesting puzzles, use a mobile app with brain-enhancing tasks, or even try to learn something completely new, like a different language. Challenging your brain is like exercise for your mind. Commit to an old favorite hobby. If you once had a hobby like building model cars, collecting stamps, going fishing, or some other fun pastime, make a resolution to revisit that joyful hobby this year. If you have limited mobility that makes that hobby a challenge, find ways to adapt it, and build a new hobby that you can enjoy now.
