Strategies for Keeping Your Mind Sharp

Some studies have shown that for seniors, reading and writing can prevent memory decline by almost one-third.

Exercise. Everyone needs exercise for a healthy body, and it also benefits your brain from increased blood flow and healthier cellular activity. Walking is a great exercise that doesn’t require special equipment. Other senior-friendly exercises include swimming, yoga, and tennis. Always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise activity to be sure it’s a healthy choice for you.

Proper posture. A sharp mind comes down to blood flow because optimal blood flow delivers healthy nutrients to your brain cells. You might not associate good posture with a sharp mind, but consistent slouching can impede that blood flow. Always aim to sit or stand with proper posture for a healthy body and mind.

Sufficient sleep. Your brain needs to rest for optimal health, so it’s important to prioritize good sleep. In seniors, medications and some medical conditions can cause you to wake up several times each night, so it’s important to practice healthy sleep patterns so you get the rest you need.

Some other activities that keep your mind sharp include:

  • Healthy eating
  • Drawing and art activities
  • Playing games like chess, trivia, and puzzles
  • Music, both listening and instrument playing
  • Finding a new hobby
  • Learning a new language
